Defense Lines

If I have a long defense line (say 6 units long), how does defense work? If the line is attacked in the middle, do all 6 units defend? Or is it only the units adjacent to the defending unit that defend?

Only the adjacent units defend.

Only one of the units (stack) adjacent to the attacked unit defends together with the attacked one.
