Give back occupied territories

Hi guys, a quick question.

If I play a game with two teams and want to help an ally under enemy attack, can I give him back his past territories which I reconquer?
Or it's impossibile and I have to keep them?

By leaving 0 units in a city your ally can take that city by placing a unit there.
