Changing nickname

You can change your nickname every 24hours. When you do this and you change yournickname to a nickname that already exist, you get a message "nickname already exist" (duh). But then you have to wait another 24hours before you can change it again, without your nickname being changed the last 24hours.

I never got that. When I changed my username to The Desert Fox from Emperor, I first changed it to Erwin Rommel, then The Desert Fox 5 minutes later.

I really don't see how this is possible without the username actually being changed. Can you replicate this or was it just a one-time thing?
